City of Rochester River Police
Description:Three men of the Rochester City Police were designated as ‘The River Police’, a Sergeant and two constables. They were all ex-mercantile marines, and had to be able to row against the strong tide of the River Medway.

The Police officer at the front of the boat is my Grandfather William Henry Stone his Police collar number was 1. He was admitted to the Freedom of the Fishery and of the Company of Free Dredgers of the City of Rochester on the Eighth day of May 1894 and a Freeman of the City of Rochester on Fourteenth day of July 1894. He also used to carry the Silver Oar at official functions including at the annual River Court.
