| Description: | Throughout the United Kingdom, prior to the introduction of the now familiar ‘Bobbies’ helmet, police forces wore all different types of headgear, from the bowler hat to the top hat and stove pipe, and many others. In Kent, after wearing the Stove-Pipe hat for 6 years, we moved over to the Kepi, sometimes called a shako, until 1896 when we went to the helmet. |

This is not a Kepi, it is called a Shako. Although this is not the common '1869 Shako', it is very similar to the ones worn by the Officers in your photo archive.
